Chemical name
  • (2S,3S)-2-benzhydryl- N-(5- tert-butyl-2-methoxybenzyl)quinuclidin-3-amine citrate monohydrate.

Physical properties
  • Peach-colored oval tablets (16, 24, 60 and 160 mg of maropitant as maropitant citrate per tablet).
  • Injectable solution (10 mg maropitant, 63 mg sulphobutylether-beta-cyclodextrin, 3.3 mg meta-cresol and water).

Storage requirements
  • Store at controlled room temperature (20-25°C; 68-77°F) with excursions between 15-30°C (59-86°F).
  • Use vial of injectable solution within 28 days of first vial puncture.
Uses Top

Action
  • Neurokinin (NK1) receptor antagonist that blocks the pharmacological action of substance P in the CNS.

Indications
  • Prevention of emesis Vomiting.
  • Prevention of emesis associated with motion sickness.
Administration Top


Routes of administration
  • Sub-cutaneous injection.
  • Oral.


Dosage

Basic dose

Acute vomiting

  • Tablets : minimum dose of 2 mg/kg (0.9 mg/lb) body weight SID for up to 5 consecutive days.
  • Injectable solution : 1.0 mg/kg (0.45 mg/lb) equal to 1.0 ml/10 kg (1.0 ml/22 lb) of body weight SC SID for up to 5 consecutive days.
    Tip Tablets and injectable solution can be used interchangeably for once daily dosing for the prevention of acute vomiting.

Motion sickness

  • Minimum dose of 8 mg/kg (3.6 mg/lb) body weight SID for up to 2 consecutive days.
  • Dogs should be fasted 1 hour prior to administration.
  • Administer tablets 2 hours prior to travel.
    Tip Both tablets and injectable solutions recommended for use in dogs 16 weeks and older.

Physiological, variations

Pregnancy
  • The safe use of Cerenia™ has not been evaluated in dogs used for breeding, pregnant or lactating bitches, dogs with gastrointestinal obstruction, or dogs that have ingested toxins.


Pathological variations

Hepatic insufficiency
  • Use with caution in dogs with hepatic dysfunction.

Use with care
  • In puppies <11 weeks of age, histological evidence of bone marrow hypoplasia was seen at higher frequency and greater severity in puppies treated with Cerenia™ than in control puppies. In puppies 16 weeks and older, bone marrow hypoplasia was not seen.


Interactions

with other drugs
  • Use with caution with other protein bound drugs. The concomitant use of Cerenia™ with other protein bound drugs such as NSAIDs, cardiac, anticonvulsant and behavioral medications has not been evaluated.
